THE IDAHO MURDERS: COLLEGE NIGHTMARE remains one of Netflix’s most watched true crime documentaries after debuting at number one with 18.2 million views, and it is easily one of the platform’s saddest and most disturbing watches.
The three episode series reconstructs the 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin through police bodycam footage, private messages, surveillance video and emotional interviews with their families and friends.
Investigators connected Bryan Kohberger to the crime through DNA found on a knife sheath, footage of his vehicle and cellphone evidence. He pleaded guilty and received four consecutive life sentences, but the plea prevented a full trial and he has never explained why he chose that house, why he targeted those four students or how he carried out everything alone.
